Modification of the cognitive model for bulimia via path analysis on a Brazilian adolescent sample

Article Abstract:

An examination of eating disturbances in middle-class Brazilian adolescents from three high schools using path analysis revealed normative prevalence rates for eating and weight concerns among these youths. Results showed that cases of eating disorders among the upper-middle class in Brazil are not rare and are close to US levels in middle-class populations. Heavier weight and the perception of being overweight were found to contribute to weight concern. Results provide support for important variables in the cognitive model of bulimia and suggest that body weight and the perceived ideal body shape be included as additional variables.

What is binge eating? A comparison of binge eater, peer, and professional judgments of eating episodes

Article Abstract:

The agreement between binge-eating persons, non-eating disordered individuals and professional dietitians on what can be considered binges was studied. Binge-eating disorder persons labeled a substantially higher percentage of their eating as binges compared to non-eating disordered people. Peer judges were found to be more likely than were dietitians to label participants' eating episodes as binges. Agreement between dietitian and peer groups were observed to be poor to fair, while agreement between these groups was fair. Agreement between participants and the external judges was poor.
