Newcomers to Canada from former Yugoslavia: settlement issues

Article Abstract:

The authors describe the difficulties Yugoslavian immigrants and refugees are experiencing in their attempts to settle and adapt to their new residency in Canada. Newcomers reported difficulty with the language barrier, with the securing of appropriate and adequate employment, and with obtaining housing and health insurance. Social workers are offered suggestions for addressing these difficulties, and national settlement policies are discussed.

Adolescent prostitution in Canada and the Philippines; statistical comparisons, an ethnographic account and policy options

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the prevalence of childhood sexual abuse in prostitutes are discussed. A Canadian study of ex-prostitutes in Alberta indicated that pimps and drug dealers often preyed on runaways from abusive homes, and a comparison with Bombay and Manila indicated that child prostitution was much less frequent there.
