Occupational therapy stations in China: economic integration or economic stratification for people with learning difficulties

Article Abstract:

A survey of 13 occupational therapy stations in the Dong Shan District of Guangzhou in China in 1994-95 assesses the effectiveness of these stations in helping people with learning difficulties. The survey of 88 trainees reveals mixed results. While the trainees do acquire some social skills, they are marginal in terms of economic contribution to the community. The inadequate resources make these stations problematic as they reinforce the secondary status of people with learning disabilities. Also there is a conflict between the possessive individualism and collectivism, which are the values that underlie these stations.

The nature of social services in Hong Kong

Article Abstract:

The Hong Kong government's concern for a profitable economic environment has led it to intervene extensively with social services in order to maintain a stable political situation. Although its processes are not fully democratic, it enjoys the support of the people because of its effective economic and social systems. The government, however, has kept some areas absolutely free from social development, namely low direct tax rates, budget surplus and the primacy of economic policy.
