Organizations, stratification, and 'The American Occupational Structure.' (Symposium)

Article Abstract:

Peter Blau and Otis Duncan influenced the development of a new line of research on the organizational bases of stratification. The concept of structure in Blau and Duncan's 'The American Occupational Structure' (AOS) patterns of social mobility are modeled exclusively in terms of the characteristics of individuals. Thus, research on the organizational bases of stratification has come to provide an image of structure and attainment opposite to the one found in AOS. However, the AOS hasan enduring influence in its example of research addressing vital sociological issues with discipline and elegance.

Firm commitments

Article Abstract:

Arlie Russell Hochschild's book, 'The Time Bind: When Work Becomes Home and Home Becomes Work,' has grabbed the headlines and the attention of media due to its central argument. Hochschild argues that a fundamental change has taken place in American society wherein work becomes home and home becomes work. She based her thesis on the introduction of total quality management in the workplace which provides a family-friendly atmosphere to workers. However, her data do not support her claim that the values of men and women have changed with an increasing commitment to work more than family.

Minimizing workplace gender and racial bias

Article Abstract:

Women in full-time employment earn 25% less than their male counterparts, while African Americans earn 22% less than whites, and Hispanics earn 32% less. While unemployment figures are at an all-time low, unemployment among African Americans is twice that of whites. Every year in the US, the EEOC receives 80,000 complaints of discrimination in the workplace, with a similar number filed with state civil rights agencies.
