Perceptions of friends' use of alcohol, cigarettes, and marijuana among urban schoolchildren: a longitudinal analysis

Article Abstract:

Perceived friends' use of alcohol, cigarettes, and marijuana among urban adolescent and preadolescent school children is related more to prior substance use over a longitudinal period as compared to peers' self-reported actual use. Findings minimize the importance of friends' use on substance use although the influence of perceived peers' substance use increases with age. Perceived friends' use influences subsequent perceptions rather than determines subsequent substance use. Classmates' use and perceived family use also predict prior substance use.

Mode effects for collecting alcohol and tobacco data among 3rd and 4th grade students: A randomized pilot study of Web-form versus paper-form surveys

Article Abstract:

The feasibility and possible mode effects of using a Web-form versus a paper-form survey to collect alcohol and tobacco data from 3rd and 4th grade students were examined. The findings of the study offer preliminary evidence that Web-form surveys could be considered for collecting alcohol and tobacco use data among young children.
