'Please don't think of me as a sociologist': Sophonisba Preston Breckinridge and the early Chicago school

Article Abstract:

Two primary assumptions about the relationship between the women and men of the Chicago School have emerged over the years which are the women were frustrated sociologists and the women were displaced sociologists. These assumptions are examined through a case study of the life and work of Sophonisba Preston Breckinridge who is among those characterized as a frustrated and displaced sociologist, but her own words to friend, 'Please don't think of me as a sociologist', suggest that this was not always the case.
