Predicting adequacy of parenting by people with mental retardation

Article Abstract:

Bases used by researchers in determining adequacy of parenting by mentally handicapped parents are the cognitive growth of children and the commission of neglectful and abusive acts against them. Predisposition of parents with mental retardation to maltreat their children is correlated with the absence of social and familial supports, such as friends and relatives. These supports purportedly help the handicapped parents cope with parenting demands. Having psychologicallly unstable partners has also been related to the commission of child abuse by mentally retarded parents.

Understanding and reacting to the anogential exam: implications for patient preparation

Article Abstract:

A study was undertaken to determine the extent of knowledge of both the parents and sexually abused children on anogenital examinations and evaluate the impact of the preparatory information on the child's examination distress. Anogenital examinations are conducted to evaluate the magnitude of the sexual offense and for reassurance of the body's healing process. Results revealed that majority of parents were inadequately prepared for their children's examinations. It was observed that children's knowledge on the examination lessened their distress during the evaluation.

Childhood sexual abuse: impact on a community's mental health status

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to determine the relationship between childhood sexual abuse and the mental well-being of a community. Respondents were 3,131 persons, 18 years old and above, from catchment areas in Los Angeles, CA. Findings revealed that childhood sexual violation experiences cause psychological disorders or drug dependence among the victims. These results, therefore, point to the need to stop the commission of sexual abuse against children to improve social relations in a community.
