Psychological distress and adaptational problems associated with discontinuation of benzodiazepines

Article Abstract:

Psychosocial factors can play a significant role in exacerbating problems associated with benzodiazepine (BZD) withdrawal, according to research investigating the psychological distress and the adaptation problems suffered by patients withdrawing from BZD. These patients were compared with a group of patients already being treated with BZD but not seeking to withdraw and a group of patients of similar diagnostic category but not receiving any medication. There were found to be no BZD group differences on measures of demographic characteristics, type and use of BZD, personality, number of life events, satisfaction with social support and amount of social support.
