Cultural, social, and intrapersonal factors associated with substance use among alternative high school students

Article Abstract:

Cultural, social and intrapersonal factors linked to tobacco, alcohol and illicit drug use in students attending dropout prevention/recovery high schools, were identified. The study reveals that health education and health promotion programs for students attending such schools are important and should include prevention of initiation as well as treatment.

Substance use, religiosity, and other protective factors among Hungarian adolescents

Article Abstract:

An examination is conducted of the role of religiosity and other protective factors that act as mediators protecting the Hungarian adolescents in the postsocialist Hungary. Calculated odds ratios determined that religiosity played an important role in the lives of Hungarian adolescence and the use of heroin and marijuana was related to religiosity.

Prevalence and correlates of past-year substance use, abuse, and dependence in a suburban community sample of high-school students

Article Abstract:

The severity of substance use, abuse and dependence was assessed by surveying a community sample of high school students, in a suburban New Jersey. The measure of substance use disorders was based on 27 specially designed questions that approximate the DSM-IV criteria for abuse and dependence.
