Race, colonialism, and criminal law: Mexicans and the American criminal justice system in territorial New Mexico

Article Abstract:

The author examines the criminal justice system of San Miguel County in the New Mexico Territory, from 1875 to 1900, and counters misconceptions about lawlessness in the west by demonstrating the inclusion of the Mexican population, as witnesses, bailiffs, and jurors, in the legal system.
