Reflections on Global Capitalism

Article Abstract:

A number of factors are changing the world economy such as the entry of large numbers of rural migrants into the labor force, relocation of industry and a reduction in the role of nations. William Greider has examined these trends and has not given enough weight to the role of automation in displacing workers. He takes a marxist perspective which has proved to be right in identifying a purchasing power gap, though previously capitalism has been successful despite Marx's predictions. Greider's solution involves the public taking on ownership of stocks in a mutual fund, and this solution could prove to be appropriate.

A revolution in progress: today's proliferating science and technology

Article Abstract:

Rapid technological change includes major projects and smaller scale work carried out by entrepreneurs. Japan moved toward basic science research inthe late 1980s, while the US moved toward applied science and away from basic research. Developments in information technology have affected production and design, as well as inventory management. Biotechnology affects a number of areas such as farming and the production of new drugs. Job losses are likely to result from these changes, and this will affect service industries as well as manufacturing occupations.

The world war II relocation of Japanese-Americans

Article Abstract:

Japanese-Americans have accused Americans of being biased against them during World War-II. This myth has been dispelled by arguments that prove that though Japanese-Americans were evacuated, Americans were sympathetic towards the Japanese in relocating them. The evacuation was necessary due to the threat to national security. The long-term effects of the relocation were favorable to Japanese-Americans.
