Reimagining Aboriginality in the circus space

Article Abstract:

It is possible to gain an insight into the complex issues associated with racial positioning in 19th century Australia through the life of Aboriginal circus performer Harry Cardella. His marriage to a white Australian woman enhances understanding of ways in which identities of gender and race can be re-evaluated. Through this couple's links with the fringe society of the circus, it was possible for them to marry and bring up children in a way which was not possible for most indigenous people at that time. The circus provided a space of relative freedom and choice for them.
