Addressing discrepancies between values and behavior: the motivating effect of reasons

Article Abstract:

This article examines the effect of contemplating reasons related to personal values on subsequent value-related behavior. Findings indicate that subjects who considered the reasoning behind the values of helpfulness and equality were more motivated to behave in related ways than subjects who were exposed to value primes or surveys.

Effects of introspection about reasons for values: extending research on values-as-truisms

Article Abstract:

Tests conducted to analyze whether reasons for values serving different motivations at different level cause people to change are presented. It is stated that it may be possible to introduce interventions that help people discuss values in a more rational and logical manner, perhaps as a means of better achieving constructive resolutions to many social issues that pertain to values, by understanding the bases of values.

Relations between values, attitudes, and behavioral intentions: the moderating role of attitude function

Article Abstract:

Attitude function may be useful in predicting when values will function as predictors of attitudes and behavioral intentions. The results of a study manipulating attitude with utilitarian and value-expressive reasons reveal that only the subjects in the value-expressive attitude condition show significant relations between values and attitudes, as well as a systematic pattern of value-attitude relation and a predictive relation between values and behavioral intentions.
