Repercussions of self-construal for self-relevant and other-relevant choice

Article Abstract:

The perceptions of choices and their outcomes are examined as a factor of independent and interdependent self-construals, the identity of the chooser and the recipient of the choice. The results have shown that independents like choices they make for themselves more than interdependents, but like choices they make for others and choices others make for them less than interdependents.

Transitory determinants of values and decisions: the utility (or nonutility) of individualism and collectivism in understanding cultural differences

Article Abstract:

The concepts of individualism and collectivism are used to examine cultural differences in values, focusing on how cultural orientation guides the evaluation of behavior and decision-making. The research compares and contrasts the values of Hong Kong Chinese and European Americans with regard to decision-making behavior.

This article examines the role of culture in human agency or motivation, focusing on how individualistic or collectivistic cultures influence how subjects perceive their agency. Perception of self and group in Western and non-Western cultures is discussed.
