Reflections of a social work practitioner: bridging the 19th and 21st centuries

This article examines the practice of social work and discusses the current level of professionalism within the field. The author argues that social work is very much a profession, maintaining social workers must stop questioning themselves, and explores the impact of Jane Addams, one of the founders of social work.

Coming to terms with the business of direct practice social work

The work experiences of contemporary direct practice social workers is examined. The author, maintaining the work environment of direct practice social workers is extremely competitive and marketing oriented, argues that the profession of social work must refocus on social reform and charity and less on its current business practices.
