Effects of alternative reinforcement on human behavior: the source does matter

Article Abstract:

There appears to be temporal contiguity in human behavior caused by response-independent deliveries of money, food, points, or other rewards. When all superimposed point deliveries came immediately after the target response, time allocated to the target response increased, with this time decreasing when superimposed point deliveries could be made at any time.

Averaging effects in the study of fixed-ratio response patterns

Article Abstract:

The averaging effects of fixed-ratio response patterns were studied by exposing rats to multiple fixed-ratio schedules with alternating large and small ratios in a random manner. Results showed that the mean pause increased as a function of ratio size while the duration was influenced more by the size of the succeeding ratio than the size of the previous one. The longer pauses that were ahead of the larger upcoming ratios were prolonged when the previous ratio was small. This is an indication that the small-large sequence generated longer pausing than large-large one.
