Slow codes

Article Abstract:

Slow codes violate informed consent because there is no complete attempt to rescue the patient. Instead, slow codes let the patient die with the appearance of attempted resuscitation. A study shows that slow codes occur in situations that lead to full codes where neither the patient nor the patient's family is involved in end-of-life discussions. This is due to fear that such discussions may result in loss of hope.
