Soap operas and gossip

Article Abstract:

Soap operas, and the gossip or idle talk they portray and stimulate, plays a wider role than viewers are generally aware of. Gossip between the characters provides viewers with information and details on the development of the plot and shifting relationships between the characters. The popularity of soap operas has made them topics of gossip between viewers, most of whom are women. The popular press also contributes to the spread of gossip by discussing relationships between characters, aspects of production, and also by interviewing and writing about the performing artists.

Public eyes and private genes: historical frames, news constructions, and social problems

Article Abstract:

The way news media report about the relationship between genetics and social or behavioral problems has significant influence on the public's perception of these problems. The emergence of the pseudoscience, eugenics, in the early 1900s sparked social and racial discrimination that affected immigrants and intercultural relationships between racially diverse groups. Furthermore, the way genetics is perceived by the public eye through media news reporting should be guided by social scientists to prevent misconceptions.
