Stress factors and mental health adjustment of Filipino domestic workers in Hongkong

Article Abstract:

A qualitative research on the stress factors and mental health adjustment of Filipino domestic helpers (FDHs) in Hongkong was conducted. The Filipino Anxiety and Depression Scale was used to interview a sample of 600 FDHs. Through employing a cluster analysis method on the views of the respondents, two groups of women with good levels of mental health were identified: educated women who migrated because of adventure and women with years of experience as domestic helpers in Hongkong. Furthermore, these FDHs were found to have created their own social network that provides them security.

Filipino American women, work and family: an examination of factors affecting high labor force participation

Article Abstract:

A secondary data analysis of Hawaii's 1984 statewide survey of women in labor force was conducted. The respondents were asked to respond to various instruments, such as the Work Environment Scale and the Family Environment Scale. Findings indicated that Filipino-American women tend to work more than other Caucasian women because of their tendency to view work negatively. Furthermore, the study supported the findings that Filipino-American women with spouses and children, and of financial need are more likely to work than other respondents.
