Sustainability of prevention

This article presents guidelines on how to ensure sustainability for effective prevention programs for substance abuse and social problems. Permanent or long-term funding, professional development for researchers and practitioners, program institutionalization, and the cooperation of community agencies all contribute to the sustainability of effective prevention programs.

Evaluating the evidence of effectiveness for preventative interventions: using a registry system to influence policy through science

Article Abstract:

This article examines the use of a web-based database in the development of programs to prevent drug use, mental illness, and other social problems in communities. A registry describing scientific information on the effectiveness of individual programs could play an integral role in helping communities choose effective and appropriate prevention programs.

Substance abuse prevention: moving from science to policy

This article examines the role of government in enforcing drug laws and preventing drug abuse. The United States currently focuses on drug supply reduction through law enforcement but more comprehensive research demonstrating the economic and social benefits of drug prevention and treatment could help establish more effective drug policies.
