Terminating intervention: understanding exit strategy and U.S. involvement in intrastate conflicts

Article Abstract:

.he Vietnam experience and the recent US involvement in less-than-absolute conflicts has generated debate on developing appropriate exit strategies. Terminating intervention in limited engagements involves clear definitions of political and operational goals besides fallback options. The outcome depends largely on integrating exit calculations into intervention decisions. The level of involvement in the conflict determines the degree to which exit decisions are woven into the operational strategy. Midlevel interventions generally ignore exit considerations, evident in the case of Somalia.
