The Spratlys and other South China Sea islands disputes

Article Abstract:

Political observers hope that increasing economic interdependence and political ties between China and ASEAN countries will encourage their leaders to seek the path of peace and cooperation in the the South China Sea region. Trade between China and ASEAN countries increased from $20.4 billion in 1996 to $24.4 billion in 1997. For its part, China said that it will use international law and the law of the sea in settling claims in the South China Sea region and promised not to compromise the security of sea lanes.
