The housing famine for veterans: A call for congressional action

Article Abstract:

The inadequacy of housing assistance for veterans has become a national issue and has prompted Congress to develop veterans' housing program that offers rental assistance or interest-rate subsidies for homeownership. This can lead housing professionals playing important roles in helping persuade Congress to provide rental assistance and interest-rate subsidies for veterans and their families.

Honoring service: Miss America champions homeless veterans

Article Abstract:

An overview is presented on the efforts of Heather French, Miss America 2000, to win affordable housing for veterans, along with a brief history of the Maryland Center for Veterans Education and Training. MCVET provides homeless veterans with services such as a 120-bed transitional shelter, an 80-bed apartment building, and a 50-bed emergency shelter.

Kirkland Interfaith Transition in Housing (KITH) treats homelessness as a family issue and has found a benefactor in Windermere Real Estate. With a shrinking federal budget, projects providing affordable housing to the homeless have to be supported by organizations like Windermere.
