The many faces of public housing: Affordable Assisted Living Program

Article Abstract:

The National Association of Housing & Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) 2005 Awards of Excellence reward efforts that take into account the physical and social needs of each unique resident population, rather than just carpeting, appliances and utilities. The Millville Housing Authority (MHA), New Jersey, the winner of the award recognized a need for in-home services for its elderly population, and designed the Assisted Living Program (ALP), which incorporates personal care services, 24-hour supervision, medication supervision and administration, meals, and so on.

The many faces of public housing: BITS -- Bringing Information/Technology to Seniors

Article Abstract:

The City of Phoenix Housing Department, decided that computer laboratories might be a good way to engage senior residents, help them communicate cheaply and easily with family and friends, and provide access to health and other important information for the implementation of which it developed the Bringing Information/Technology to Seniors (BITS) program. The program won a National Association of Housing & Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) 2005 Award of Excellence for helping residents become more physically and socially active.

The profiles of the winners of NAHRO's 2005 Awards of Excellence in Program Innovation: Affordable Housing with reference to their challenges faced in meeting affordable housing. Some of them include The Housing Authority of the County of Santa Barbara (HACSB), The Douglas County Housing Authority (DCHA) and The Madison Housing Authority (MHA).
