Collective Action Across Borders: opportunity structures, network capacities, and communicative praxis in the age of advanced globalization

Article Abstract:

The Zapatista uprising in Chiapas, Mexico, highlights the ability of a locally engendered social movement to gain support from countries across the globe. The movement can be traced to native peasants' local efforts to gain recognition and equitable rights from the government. As these pleas are basically rights that should have been guaranteed by a democratic government, the movements' supporters gained nationwide attention. The government was restrained from using its military forces to suppress the uprising by international organizations that uphold human and civil rights.

The morality of market exchange: love, money, and contractual justice

Article Abstract:

Research appears to have neglected the most interesting aspect of prostitution, which is that it is not just a criminalized sexual activity but also an economic exchange. This exchange not only describes a line in a society between what may be given as a gift and what may be exchanged as a commodity, but it also serves as an arena for debate on the morality of the market. Thus, a study was conducted to test the argument that commodity exchange in market economies is justified in terms of self interest and is, at the same time, given moral justification. Results are discussed.

Developing an exchange network simulator

Article Abstract:

Computer simulations are gaining widespread use in the social sciences. However, many social scientists remain unaware of the complexities involved in formulating computer simulations that have been used to study theories in their disciplines. To give social scientists a glimpse into these complexities, the process of developing X-Net computer simulation is presented.
