The role of stereotyping in overconfident social prediction

Article Abstract:

The role of stereotype and prototypicality assessment in overconfident social prediction was investigated using a field study methodology. Specifically, behavioral predictions about particular members of stereotyped groups as well as the issue of prototypicality among students were analyzed. Empirical results showed that students on campus made predictions with more subjective confidence than their objective accuracy allowed. Overconfidence in social prediction seems to arise from the students' inability to distinguish items that feature high or low stereotype validity.

Ethnic influences on exemplar retrieval and stereotyping

Article Abstract:

Two studies on the impact of subject ethnicity on categorization and stereotyping of previously viewed and new target persons revealed that Hispanic subjects categorize and stereotype the targets by ethnicity more than by gender, whereas Anglo subjects employ gender as the prominent category. Subjects were shown photographs in two blocks, first giving stereotypic trait judgments and then categorizing new photos in relation to the first set. The impact was more powerful for old photos in comparison to the new photos, revealing the effect of earlier experiences.

Preconsciously controlling stereotyping: implicitly activated egalitarian goals prevent the activation of stereotypes

Article Abstract:

Pronunciation and lexical decision tasks were used to investigate the preconscious activation of cultural stereotypes. Individuals committed to counter-stereotypic beliefs disrupt the automatic activation of stereotypes by associating social categories with fairness and equality goals.
