The utility of novelty seeking, harm avoidance, and expectancy in the prediction of drinking

Article Abstract:

Pathological drinking patterns are related to higher expectancies in people exhibiting novelty-seeking, rather than those with harm-avoidance temperament. Individuals high on novelty-seeking and low on harm-avoidance, drink more frequently than those who are low on novelty-seeking and harm-avoidance. The Scale two of the Alcohol Expectancy Questionnaire-Adolescent form predicts the amount of consumption most accurately. Novelty-seeking is associated with expectations of social functioning, while temperament and expectancy remain unrelated.

Validation of cocaine and marijuana effect expectancies in a treatment setting

Article Abstract:

The validity of the Cocaine Effect Expectancy Questionnaire (CEEQ) and the Marijuana Effect Expectancy Questionnaire (MEEQ) in discriminating between drug use patterns in a clinical population, was investigated. Cocaine users were found to endorse fewer global positive cocaine expectancies than infrequence users or non users. On the MEEQ, nonusers expected more negative effects from marijuana than users.
