Third parties and the two-party system

Article Abstract:

The stability of the two-party system has been doubted since the late 1960s. Along with the decline of public regard for partisanship, a rise in confidence in alternative parties has been noted, especially with the emergence of Ross Perot and the increased activities of third parties and independent candidates. However, despite increased public support for another party, the ability of any third party to maintain that support is being questioned. An elected third party is faced with the challenge of convincing the public that it has the ability to govern.

Thunder on the Right: Austria's Jorg Haider and Freedom Party

Article Abstract:

Jorg Haider, leader of Austria's Freedom Party, is one of the most successful right-wing leaders in contemporary European politics. However, despite his popularity, especially among young professionals and blue-collar workers, there is apprehension in some political circles that his rise may signal the resurgence of rightist extremism in Austria. The American Jewish Committee, for example, has even said that the Freedom Party's victory over the Socialist Party in the 1994 parliamentary elections posed a threat to Jews.

What's wrong with this picture? The politics of Ellen's coming out party

Article Abstract:

The hype in the US about the coming out of Ellen DeGeneres as a homosexual in Steyn 80, US television programme, is indicative of US homophobia. Clergymen criticized the programme, J.C. Penney and Chrysler, two leading advertisers, withdrew their sponsorship of the programme, and religious Right bodies placed a full-page advertisement in 'Variety,' condemning the programme.
