To diagnose, prescribe and dispense: whose right is it? The ongoing struggle between pharmacy and medicine in South Africa

Article Abstract:

This article examines the struggle between the pharmaceutical industry and doctors regarding the right to prescribe and dispense medication. The author, focusing on the growing controversy in South Africa, argues the pharmacies are successfully curtailing the physicians' rights to prescribe and dispense medication in an effort to gain control over what they consider their jurisdiction.

Some members of the African National Congress (ANC) sense that involvement in social movements would be construed as 'disloyal'. The involvement of people in self-empowering organs of direct and participatory democracy is important as a manifestation of pluralism.
