Structural foundations for e-commerce adoption: a comparative organization of retail trade between Japan and the United States

Article Abstract:

Research is presented on business-to-consumer transactions and relationships between online retailing and brick-and-mortar stores in metropolitan areas of Japan and the US. While personal computer ownership in Japan lags behind that of the US, electronic commerce has been able to flourish because of alliances online services have forged with convenience stores.

Ethnic competition in the retail trade in Northern U.S cities in 1900: a test of the saturation theory of entrepreneurship

Article Abstract:

The Saturation theory of entrepreneurship stated that the presence of highly enterprising groups in urban economies impedes the entry of less-enterprising groups into small business by analyzing census data on retail enterprise in the urban North in 1990.The results from the test rejects the Saturation theory and supports the theory of ethnic division of labor.

An overview is presented on the spatial evolution of the retail industry, from physical location to online services. Impacts range from the decline of the store as a central feature of business and social interaction, and the rise of the home as a place for both purchasing and consumption.
