Travel literature: the "Medland" trope in the British holiday brochure

Article Abstract:

The travel brochure is a genre of popular literature with limited variation in motif and pattern. The brochures promote holiday destinations and are read only by those wishing to holiday in the particular places they advertize. Brochures generally concentrate on the pleasure aspect of a holiday. Examination of brochures promoting sojourns in the Mediterranean reveals an emphasis on the major elements of sun, sea, sand and sex in a familiar and homelike setting. Areas of art, culture and civilization are generally neglected.

"A dose of exquisite aeshetics": literature in American medicine, 1902-06

Article Abstract:

Interest in literature in the medical community is reflected in the inclusion of poetry and fiction on medical themes in medical journals. Some of the book reviews in medical journals also evaluate poetry, short stories, drama, and novels with medical themes. Between 1902-1906, medical journals were replete with literary works. These literary works served physicians' escapist attitude and helped in their upward mobility. Physicians who appreciated literature were more likely to have affluent patients.

'Hoods and the woods: Rap music as environmental literature

Article Abstract:

The ecocritical reading of the lyrics of rap music positions it at the crossroads of African American literature and the predominantly white literary and critical field of environmental literature. Ecologically informed and informative rap, with its emphasis on urban space and its attachment to locale, constitutes an urban environmental discourse that both analyzes and comments on the built environment.
