Union presentation of self and worker participation in organizing campaigns

Article Abstract:

A study conducted among 30 workers, who were interviewed after a union organizing campaign, proposes that a worker's decision to participate in a union is dependent upon the latter's characteristics and the manner by which it presents itself. The study further revealed that a union whose self- presentation is as a business which has a product to sell shall gain a weak participation as workers shall treat the payment of dues as a business transaction. In like manner, unions, armed with the knowledge that its image affects employees' perception towards it, may be capable of controlling their destiny.

'Farewell My Concubine,' the motion picture of Chen Kaige, released in 1993, indicates the level of dislike of homosexuals in China and the related cultural violence. It is the tale of two opera stars from Peking, who have been friends from childhood. One, Chen Dieyi, is trained to play a female role, which spills into his own life, and his feelings for his friend, Duan Xiaolou, are not reciprocated. After years and years of misery, Dieyi commits suicide in front of Xiaolu. Within the tale are scenes showing the discrimination against women and effeminate men.
