Urban poverty and the social consequences of privatized food assistance
Article Abstract:
Nonprofit organizations are becoming more important in the lives of many people as contract providers of government-mandated goods and services, particularly food assistance. They represent the welfare state to its citizens by providing a buffer between state policy and service delivery. Evidences indicate that these nonprofit organizations have become increasingly institutionalized in a level parallel to the bureaucracy of governnment agencies. There is a need for anthropological research to examine poverty, welfare, and other aspects of changing relationships between the state and the voluntary sector.

Delinking urban economies: the European experience
Article Abstract:
The increasing trend of European cities delinking themselves from their respective national economies is observed. In this process, the power of national governments is reduced while greater urban and regional autonomy is achieved among delinked cities. Recent studies show that, in general, their performance significantly exceed that of their national economies as in the case of Barcelona and Rotterdam. The results enable delinked cities to influence the supply of local graduates, improve environmental quality, and attract the new dynamic sectors.
