Urban/rural elderly health status differences: the dichotomy reexamined

Article Abstract:

No simple dichotomy exists between the health of the urban elderly and those of their rural counterparts. Conclusions derived from health policy research that senior rural residents exhibit greater incidences of sickness than those in urban areas are false as findings on the health status between the two populations depend on the analytic strategy that was utilized. The formulation of health policies requires the individual examination of different regions. Health policy initiatives should be based on community-based research.

Ask older women: are the elderly better off?

Article Abstract:

Poverty among older females tends to be understated by both researchers and legislators. The poverty index employed to measure poverty among the different social groups has flaws yet the media still promote the notion that poverty is less among senior than younger citizens. In reality, the "aged", especially black women who are living alone, are certainly not less impoverished than the "non-aged". Moreover, there is need for Social Security to be more sympathetic to old age poverty.

Rural public transportation and the mobility of older persons: paradigms for policy

Article Abstract:

Federal public transportation policy for the elderly in rural areas are analyzed. It is argued that the problems associated with rural transit programs are caused by federal regulation and deregulation cycles and the lack of funding. Policy recommendations are also discussed including the need for the government to support the elderly's efforts to maintain their ability to drive and identify the areas with inadequate public transportation.
