Will Europe invest in missile defense?

Article Abstract:

Ballistic missile defense systems are expensive and the US has already spent $50 billion but has yet to produce a single system capable of intercepting a single missile. The earliest date when such a system would be realized would be in 2006, the time when the Theater High Altitude Defense System becomes operational. European troops are vulnerable to missile attacks unless the purchases of Pac 3 systems are increased significantly. However, various European defense ministries will continue to ignore the missile threat unless the subject is brought to the cabinet level.

The vital role of policy: or "what happened to ballistic missile defense?"

Article Abstract:

The US Ballistic Missile Defense programs have been without any clear policy guidelines for years, a fact attributed to periodic changes of direction. This truth is behind Pres. Reagan's famous Strategic Defense Initiative statement in Mar. 1983. While US nuclear technology has developed enormously over the years, policy has been largely left behind. Policy makers often stay quiescent until compelled by the situation to take action, since they are concerned that anything other than the status quo may only prove detrimental.

Why the United States still lacks a national missile defense

Article Abstract:

The US has never deployed any defense weapons that could defeat all kinds of missile attacks, since the Clinton administration assumed office in 1993. This is in respect of the ABM Treaty between the US and the former Soviet Union which was signed in 1972. Among other reasons behind the US government's reluctance in deploying a National Missile Defense are technical capability and financial commitment.
