Anatomy of a spectacle: Race, gender, and memory in the Kobe Bryant rape case

Article Abstract:

The Kobe Bryant rape case highlights racism in American society by bringing the conceptions of African American masculinity and White femininity upfront and also the role of sport and celebrity in public life. The divisions laid by the Bryant case involve long histories of discursive contests waged by social movements and these struggles influenced the public understandings of the history.
