Application of the theories of reasoned action and planned behavior to exercise behavior: a meta-analysis

Article Abstract:

Statistical analysis of 31 studies and 162 effect sizes indicates that the theory of reasoned action (TRA) is good, but the theory of planned behavior (TPB), which adds to the TRA the concept of perceived behavioral control, more accurately accounts for variables in exercise behavior. Unlike past results, the present ones do not support the idea that an intention's predictive accuracy goes down as the time between measurement and observation goes up. The relationship between expectation and behavior had larger effect sizes than that between intention and behavior.

Social influence and exercise: a meta-analysis

Article Abstract:

Results of a meta-analysis show that social influence affects exercise behavior positively. It also has a positive impact on cognition regarding exercise involvement and attitudes related to exercise experience. Family members have more influence on individuals who follow a medically prescribed excercise than on self-initiated individuals. The influence of family and other important people on attitudes associated with exercise experience ranges from medium to large.

Eating disorder indices and athletes: an integration

Article Abstract:

Research on eating disorders among athletes is presented, focusing on effect sizes in comparison to the general population. Results indicate small effect sizes in both male and female athletes for anorexia nervosa indices, bulimia nervosa indices, and drive for thinness.
