Blind date in the Bismarck: a reef-studded patch of ocean adds a new dimension to the art of weathering a storm at sea

Article Abstract:

A boat owner narrates the experience of going through a storm in the Bismarck Sea aboard a 36-foot ketch with his family. He describes how they met the storm while exploring Papua New Guinea. He also recounts how his initial estimates placed the boat's position in the middle of New Guinea.

Two sailboats had to withstand the punishment of a storm in the Atlantic Ocean in mid-Oct 1997. These were the 125-ft staysail schooner Westward with Phil Sacks as captain and the 134-ft brigantine Corwith Cramer with Peg Brandon as captain.

Hell nino

The 1998 El Nino phenomenon caused unexpected storms which surprised sailboat enthusiasts. The boat 'Polaris' experienced 80 brief squalls during its five-day trip from Acapulco, Mexico, to the Marquesas Islands.
