David Barker formed the Silverback Wilderneers as a social group for African American backpackers. The group is based in Hayward, CA, and also does outreach to adolescents and high school students, leading more than 25 trips a year. Only 4% of regular backpackers are African American.

Rangers for popular Southwest parks such as Canyonlands say ancient artifacts are being carried off by looters at an alarming rate. Although commercial looters are responsible for some of the pilfering, day-hikers and backpackers are also responsible.
