Clean up your act; when it comes to trail hygiene, what's good for you may not be good for the environment

Tips for backpackers and campers on how minimize their environmental impact on fragile ecosystems are presented. The tips include washing off bug repellent before swimming, setting up tents 200 ft away from water, using as little soap as possible and taking sponge baths.

Steady as she goes: when crossing moving water it helps to have a cool head, proper technique, and a good hiking stick

Article Abstract:

Hikers should unfasten their backpacks before crossing a stream and slip their backpacks off if they fall into water that is higher than knee level. They should find another place to cross if one crossing looks dangerous. Techniques for crossing streams are discussed.

Hard rock hiking: crossing talus presents some of backpacking's greatest challenges, risks, and rewards

Article Abstract:

Talus rocks are common around high peaks and in the off-trail areas in the Western mountains. Backpackers should cross talus with a relaxed posture and slightly bent knees. Crossing talus can be exhausting and dangerous if not done correctly.
