Coping in sport: A systematic review

Article Abstract:

A review of the literature on coping in sport, examining evidence for the trait and process perspectives, the types of coping strategies used by athletes, gender and age-related differences and coping effectiveness is presented. Evidence supports goodness-of-fit approach, choice of coping strategy, and automacity to be effective coping strategies but future research should focus on minimizing the time delay between recall and stressful experience to assess how coping changes over time.

Stressors, coping, and coping effectiveness: gender, type of sport, and skill differences

Article Abstract:

A study to examine the influence of gender, type of sport, and skill on the stressors experienced by athletes is conducted and the coping strategies employed and their effectiveness are illustrated. Results indicate that gender, type of sport played and skills are variables that influence stressors and coping during sport.

The development and maintenance of mental toughness: perceptions of elite performers

The study was conducted to determine the factors that were important to maintain mental toughness. Development of the mental toughness is a long term process that was dependent on motivation, family and a desire to succeed.
