Cultural landscapes of purification: Sports spaces and discourses of whiteness

Article Abstract:

The way discourses of whiteness and neoliberal discourses of respectability, degeneration, progress, reproduction, renewal and reinvigoration are brought to bear on the subjects who administer, use, and maintain everyday sport and recreation spaces such as locker rooms is demonstrated. It is argued that these discourses historically proceed through the racialized logics of modernity and serve to evoke or enforce hidden signs of racial superiority and cultural hegemony.

Cautionary notes on whiteness and sport studies

Article Abstract:

A broader dialogue about the epistemological and political problems and tensions accompanying sport studies scholarship about witnesses is reviewed, especially in light of the white-dominated status of higher education in North American. It is argued that white scholars align with scholars of color to create more equitable institutional arrangements in the academy to more productively challenge white supremacy within sport and sport studies scholarship.

Style matters: Explorations of bodies, whiteness, and identity in rock climbing

Article Abstract:

Style becomes a strategy of differentiation that works through the signifier of whiteness to promise wholeness to the identity of the climber. Descriptions of the events in August 2000 when members of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan took hostage four American climbers on a North Face expedition in Kyrgyzstan illustrate that whiteness only covers up the lack in the subject and creates a constant state of insecurity.
