Design and analysis of research on sport performance enhancement

Article Abstract:

A study has been carried out to evaluate research intended to measure performance enhancements that affect success of individual elite athletes in competitive events. Findings indicate that estimates of enhancement of performance in laboratory or field tests in most studies already carried out may not apply to elite athletes in competitive events. In a large proportion of studies in exercise-science literature, conclusions are based on the statistical significance of the effect with no consideration of the magnitude of the effect. Sample size is not always adequate. Results should make clear what caliber of athlete the outcome can be expected to apply to. Athletes who differ in training, diet practices, caliber and other aspects may expect different outcomes. The coefficient of variation, which is important, is the within-athlete standard deviation when expressed, for example, as a percentage of a runner's mean performance.

Consistency of swimming performance within and between competitions

Article Abstract:

Consistency of swimming performance between competitions and in competitions is discussed. Mixed linear modeling has been used to analyze official performance times for 162 female and 149 male swimmers at a junior national championship and of 104 female and 117 male swimmers at an open national championship competition 20 days later. Events differed in stroke or distance. Swimmers were most consistent in their performance for the same event between the two competitions. It was concluded that swimmers are stroke specialists vs distance specialists and should work on training and competing on a certain stroke not a certain distance and that more swimmers would be more likely to win a medal if events of one stroke were more different in distance. Factors that affect performance time by only 0.5% will affect placing for a highly ranked junior swimmer.

Velocity specificity of weight training for kayak sprint performance

Article Abstract:

Research points out that for improving the acceleration phase of sprinting, slow weight training is likely to be more effective than explosive training, but for speed maintenance, explosive training may be more effective.
