Distress communications: Without a trace

Article Abstract:

The world's distress-alerting systems shortcomings were revealed only when the 32-foot Down East cutter 'Leviathan' and its crew of two were lost in the Indian Ocean. The tragedy was traced from the last weather report received from the boat to the activation of its emergency position-indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) and the search and rescue attempts made by civilian and official sources.
