Dynamics of muscle microcirculatory oxygen exchange

Article Abstract:

A novel combination of microscopy and phosphorescence quenching techniques are utilized to understand the dynamics of microvascular O2 delivery and muscle O2 utilization (VO2m) at the onset of muscle contractions. The experiments have addressed longstanding questions regarding the site of control of VO2m kinetics and provide a first look at capillary hemodynamics at exercise onset in healthy muscle and their derangements resulting from chronic diseases.

Validity of a single-visit protocol to estimate the maximum lactate steady state

Article Abstract:

The maximum lactate steady state (MLSS) estimated from a single-visit protocol was compared with the traditional, directly measured MLSS. Results demonstrate that the single-visit, two-stage method of estimating the MLSS substantially underestimates the actual MLSS as determined from a series of constant-speed runs of up to 30-minute duration.

Oxygen uptake dynamics: From muscle to mouth- An introduction to the symposium

Article Abstract:

An introduction to the study of oxygen uptake (VO2) dynamics or kinetics is presented. Specific emphasis is laid on some of the factors, which might contribute to both the fundamental and slow phases of the VO2 kinetics.
