Effects of gender and sport type on intercollegiate athletes' perceptions of the legitimacy of aggressive behaviors in sport

Article Abstract:

This article discusses college athletes' attitudes toward the legitimacy of aggression in sport. The authors, analyzing interview responses from male and female athletes in noncontact, contact, and collision sports, conclude athletes in noncontact and contact sports felt aggression was not legitimate compared with athletes in collision sports, and female athletes felt aggression was not legitimate compared with male athletes.

The expendable Prolympic self: going beyond the boundaries of the sociology and psychology of sport

This article connects the social structures of sport with the psychology of the self, in an attempt reorient sport science research. Topics addressed include critiques of current scholarship in sports sociology and psychology, the cultural formation of Prolympism or the convergence of professional and Olympic sports, and the dynamics of athletic identity.

Race, sport, and crime: the misrepresentation of African Americans in team sports and crime

Article Abstract:

An analysis is presented on the factors that encourage crime among athletes, including organizational influences and collective behavior. It is posited that African American athletes are over-represented in crime involving sports figures, as they are expected to participate in crime based on social prejudice.
