Efficacy of external and internal vsual imagery perspectives for the enhancement of performance on tasks in which form is important

Article Abstract:

The effects of different imagery on cognitive processes are examined in three experiments in which form plays a major role: karate, gymnastics and rock climbing. External visual imagery was more effective on karateists learning a new kata, or form, followed by internal visual imagery. External visual imagery showed a significant effect on students learning a gymnastics routine, while kinesthetic imagery showed no effect. The performance of rock climbers practicing difficult maneuvers was positively effected by visual and kinesthetic imagery.
