Exercise and cellular innate immune function

Article Abstract:

Epidemiological evidence suggests there is a link between exercise intensity and infectious disease. Macrophages, natural killer cells, and polymorphonuclear neutrophils cells are the body's first defenses against foreign invasion, and production of these cells is stimulated by exercise. The precise mechanism of this relationship is not resolved.

Is infection risk linked to exercise workload?

Article Abstract:

More research is needed to determine if intense exercise suppresses the immune system. If so, this could explain why some athletes get upper respiratory tract infections during periods of heavy training and competitions.
