The 1999 America's Cup has been saddled with a few problems, including the failure of some of the challengers to gather enough funds for the $250,000 bond. However, several revisions made to the America's Cup Class rule appear to be promising, both for the race and for its yearly challengers.

Organizers of the Vendee Globe around-the-world race are examining their rules on boat design and construction following a series of accidents due to boat instability. The 1997 race claimed five boats and ended in the presumed loss of Canadian sailor Gerry Roufs.
