Many yachting enthusiasts do not use all of the capabilities of their new electronic navigational equipment. Operator's manuals are often difficult to understand. Experience is not always helpful because receivers have few standard features.

Which is wrong, the chart or the electronics?

Cruising sailors using Global Positioning System receivers are finding that charts are off by as much as a mile or two, especially charts of overseas locations. Tips for evaluating the accuracy of charts are presented.

Significant discrepancies in information provided by loran and Global Positioning System receivers are usually caused by mistakes in data entry. Techniques for diagnosing other problems are included.
